The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) is a voluntary program run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that certifies companies as trusted partners in the international supply chain.
Why it matters beyond compliance
A CTPAT-certified company sees physical border inspections drop by 73% on average. That translates into faster crossings, lower delay costs and access to express lanes at ports of entry.
The real benefit goes further: a CTPAT certificate tells your customers, partners and suppliers that you operate under international security standards. In sectors like automotive, aerospace and pharma, many contracts already list it as a minimum requirement.
The pillars of certification
The program evaluates 12 security criteria, from the physical security of facilities to business partner screening and the cybersecurity of logistics systems. Among the critical points:
The process with Logwell
As a CTPAT-certified brokerage, Logwell guides clients through the full application process, from gap assessment to control implementation and the pre-audit ahead of CBP's validation. Our compliance team then monitors the program continuously to keep the status active.
Certification carries an upfront implementation cost, but for most operations with regular crossing volume into the U.S., the return in operating efficiency and avoided penalties pays it back within the first six months.
